  • Todai-ji Temple (Pass By)

    The head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples. The main hall, the Daibutsuden houses one of Japan's largest bronze statues of Buddha (Daibutsu), 15 meters tall. Another popular attraction is a pillar with a hole in its base that is the same size as the Daibutsu's nostril. It is said that those who can squeeze through this opening will be granted enlightenment in their next life.     Established in 1880, it is the location of many of Nara's main attractions, and home to hundreds of freely roaming deer.   • Kasuga Grand Shrine (Pass By)

    Nara’s most celebrated shrine, it was also the tutelary shrine of the Fujiwara, one of Japan's most powerful family clans.
Kasuga Taisha had been periodically rebuilt every 20 years for many centuries until Edo period. Kasuga Taisha is famous for its lanterns, which have been donated by worshippers. The lanterns are only lit twice a year during two Lantern Festivals (February and August).   • Kofuku-ji Temple (Pass By)

Nara day trip

We did a 9 hour Nara day trip with Fumiko on 4/9. She was great-- we switched hotels and she was flexible in picking us up at our new hotel lobby. She was knowledgeable about the sites visited, navigated the train system for us, and was patient with our souvenir shopping and perusing during the entire day. We had a great time and I would highly recommend. We saw the Nara deer, Todai-iji temple, did some shopping in downtown Nara, and a sake tasting. She was great at personalizing our itinerary to our desired activities.

Despite a non-stop tour schedule and almost no sleep, Hiroki was wonderful and we enjoyed the sights around Nara, particularly the "Giant Buddha" temple, Nara deer park, and the (exhausting) climb and views from Mount Wakakusayama. It was a jam-packed day but highly enjoyable!

Finally, he met us at our hotel to start the day and brought us back at day's end, something many other guides in the area did not offer.
