We recently completed our trip to Japan in April 2025. We used TravelOne services to plan and book this trip. Right from the beginning, TravelOne helped us with the planning all aspects our trip from hotels, ground transfers, sightseeing and restaurant recommendations. Our driver guides for Tokyo (Yuki), Kyoto/Osaka (Nobu) and Hiroshima (Remi)  were extremely knowledgeable and took care of us throughout the day. They were always on time and customized the trip according to our needs. Working with TravelOne took the stress out and we were able to focus on enjoying the trip. We plan to use TravelOne services again and highly recommend this for your future trip as well.

Easy Entry

The line outside was super long when we arrived! The castle itself is stunning and packed with history. Just be ready for a bit of a climb to get there. There are elevators inside, but the walk up includes some steep paths and stairs. We saw some transport options going back down, which looked helpful.

Once in A Lifetime Go Karting Experience

This is one of those once in a lifetime experiences that you MUST DO! The views were incredible, the karts are fast, and our guide Yuma made the experience so memorable with tons of photos, videos, and information about the sights we saw.

Exceeded expectations!

Such a lovely morning! Exceeded my expectations. Went with the “ladies” in our family. Definitely a “girly” think to do. You are whisked in to have your hair fixed and dressed in a kimono. Then into a beautiful tatami room for the tea ceremony lead by an expert. So elegant and beautiful. Plenty of opportunities for photos.

Interesting tour with great views of the city

We learned many details about Japanese nightlife and the red light district. Even Gozilla showed up... it was very entertaining!

Lovely Experience, Delicious Food, Awesome Kitchen!

We had such an amazing time with Nathalie at Eat Osaka! The other couple didn’t show up, so we ended up having a private class. All the food we prepared was so delicious, I actually enjoyed our tempura more than the tempura we got as street food! And the udon and miso dipping sauce were AMAZING. Nathalie explained everything so well and she was so friendly. I loved chatting with her about things to do in Japan and giving her tips for things to do in my hometown. Half the fun was just chatting with her, but it was complimented by the very simple and delicious recipes. I feel like I can go home and actually make this meal, unlike other classes I’ve taken where it felt too complicated. I also loved the location in the traditional Japanese home with many of the old fixtures. It made the whole experience feel much more authentic and I felt lucky to get to be in such a beautiful setting. I cannot recommend this class enough. Please support Nathalie and her business, you will have an amazing time!

Nagasaki and local history tour.

Jon was the best guide we could have hoped for. Jon’s knowledge of the places he took us to was excellent. Jon took us to places often overlooked as well as a significant shrine and Nagasaki peace park and Museum. The museum was very sobering but a necessary reminder of the horror and futility of war. The communication towers and history was very interesting. Jon’s recommendations for other places to visit after we left him were highly valuable, especially the teppanyaki experience in Beppu and the war castle in Matsuyama. Jon also went out of his way to reunite me with my backpack after I left it in the van at the end of the day.

fantastic

Our boat experience in early summer was fantastic! The weather in Japan was perfect—not too hot and not too cold. On the deck of the boat, we enjoyed a comfortable breeze and beautiful night views. During the performances, the atmosphere on the whole boat really came alive. If the boat ride had been a bit longer, it would have been even better!

Shinto 101

I knew basically nothin' about Shintoism before this tour, but our guide was super patient and explained everything in a way that was easy to understand. We learned all about the different myths and legends, and even got to try some traditional Shinto rituals. The whole thing was just really interesting and enlightening - I feel like I learned so much!

Intro to Sapporo

Great overview and history of the city. Really helpful to start your trip here so you can make better plans to experience the city. Iku was so sweet and kind with our tour. She went above and beyond to introduce us to Sapporo as well as great recommendations and help making plans for the rest of our trip. Highly recommend and request Iku if possible.

Excellent insight into life in a small Tokyo neighbourhood's food and religion

This Tokyo tour combines food and religious rituals in a neighbourhood that's not frequented by many foreigners. The tour starts off with a special meal of clam "chowders" served on the grounds of a shrine and moves on to a temple where you can see and participate in a fire ceremony, a standup (sake) bar, an shop specializing in ume-shu (plum wine), a restaurant specializing in toro (tuna), a grill-your-own okonomiyaki-type pancake, and traditional sweet and rice cracker shops. The food experience was excellent, as are all Culinary Backstreets walks, but this one really shone because of the religious sites we visited. Our guide Michelle has lived in Tokyo for 20 years and was able to convey her knowledge of the rituals to our group, ensuring that we were respectful and committed no faux-pas during our visit. Her affection and understanding of Japan added greatly to our experience. There's no question that's too obscure to ask her, she said, and we put her to the test, asking about daily life, social habits, and general questions about living in the country. As with the tour of Kichijoji, this tour truly enhanced our enjoyment and understanding of Tokyo life. There are certainly less expensive tours available, but with a huge influx of tourists in Japan these days, there are also some tours which don't meet a very high standard. This Culinary Backstreets tour delivers excellent value for money -- in terms of the generosity of what is offered food-wise, and the terrific knowledgeable guide who knows her stuff and how to create a great atmosphere for learning. Highly recommended!

Beautiful Sights, Amazing Tour Guide

Ali was an amazing tour guide. Highly recommend. We had a great time and saw some of the most beautiful sites in Japan. Ali gave excellent food recommendations, insights, and was incredibly kind and funny.

When to visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times to visit Japan, thanks to cherry blossoms and colorful fall foliage. Summers are hot and humid, while winters bring snow to the north and mountains. Avoid Golden Week (April 29–May 5) if you prefer fewer crowds, as it's one of Japan’s busiest travel periods.

Getting around

Japan’s transport is world-class, with the Shinkansen bullet train offering fast, reliable travel between major cities. Metro systems in Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities are easy to navigate, with English signage widely available. The Japan Rail Pass is a smart option for tourists covering long distances.

Traveler tips

Respect for rules and etiquette is central to Japanese life. Remove shoes before entering homes or temples, wash before entering onsens, and avoid eating or talking loudly on public transport. A little cultural sensitivity goes a long way in making your trip smooth and memorable.
