Overview

Sumo is a traditional sport that has been practiced in Japan for over 1,400 years. Do you know what kind of life wrestlers lead to nurture their strong body and spirit? In this tour, you will enter a sumo stable, which is normally inaccessible, and see morning practice sessions of sumo wrestlers, which is a sight that is usually not available to the public Watch real sumo training up close and feel the overwhelming strength of the wrestlers! Before watching the morning practice at the Sumo stable, your guide will share some notes about the tour and cultural tips to help you enjoy the tour even more. Sumo practice is not entertainment. It is serious training, so please watch with respect and do not interrupt the practice. You will feel the depth of Sumo tradition and history through their intense and tough practice sessions! If you are lucky, you can even have your photo taken with a sumo wrestler at the end of the tour!

Should this occur, we will promptly provide a full refund for your booking. Kindly note that this experience is restricted to individuals aged 12 years and above; those younger than 12 years cannot enter the sumo stable. If we find out a guest under 12 year old, we might have to ask the guest not to join the tour without any refund. Most sumo stables typically require guests to sit on the floor as they don't provide chairs. Additionally, sumo stables retain the right to decline entry to guests who violate their rules. In such instances, refunds will not be issued. Permission to photograph sumo wrestlers or take pictures with them rests solely with the sumo stables. Be prepared for the possibility that you might not be allowed to capture photos due to decisions made by the stables. If the group size is substantial, it may be divided, with each subgroup visiting different stables. Participants might not have access to restroom facilities during the practice session, so please ensure you use the restroom before the tour commences. The duration of the sumo practice can sometimes extend beyond the estimated time, potentially causing the tour to conclude later than expected. The itinerary for this tour includes some locations that are not accessible by a wheelchair or stroller. Out of respect for other guests and to ensure the best tour for everyone, we must start the tour on time. You will not be able to join the tour, get a refund or reschedule if you are late for the tour and miss the group. We might sometime ask you to change the time/date depending on the availability of the Sumo morning practice schedule. Cancel Policy For a full refund, cancel 72 hours in advance of the tour date. Free rescheduling up to 72 hours before the tour date (depending on availability).
  • Summer in Japan is very hot and humid, so we recommend that you bring water and wear a hat to prevent heat stroke.
  • If we recognize that children are too noisy and interfere with sumo rikishi training, we may ask them to leave the sumo stable. In such a case, please understand that you may not be allowed to re-enter the stable.

Sumo wrestlers training

Enjoyed the experience of seeing Sumo wrestlers training in the stable. And the practices which are inculcated - cleaning, throwing salt for positive energy, exercises and the wrestling bouts.

I love the experience, but I was thrown off about having chairs. I thought we would be ringside. There were people seated in front of us and then all the chairs were on the same level so unless you stood up in the back, you really couldn’t see very well. There were four rows of chairs all on the same level and they were tall people in front of us. I think that should be made clear in the booking. Actually, when we entered, I was told I could sit anywhere and I chose to sit on the floor, but then the employees asked me to move. The experience was amazing itself. The sumo wrestlers are quite the athletes really amazing and mesmerizing. This particular tour did not get a photo of you in the ring with the wrestlers another tour did we got a picture with a few of them outside but I expected to have the picture in the ring That is no fault of the tour person, but that of the tour operator. Yes, when I emailed I was told the tour was limited to about 20 people . What I wasn’t told was there were a couple tours there at the same time so there were closer to 50 people there.

A must do when visiting Japan

The tour guide (I forgot his name sadly) was fantastic, with a wealth of knowledge before getting to the stable (gym), letting you know all the etiquette before entering and seeing them train. Once in, you’re given some flyers to read the history but also the current rankings of the Sumos - which we had fun pairing them up when they were fighting. The actual training they do is intense, a lot more impactful that we anticipated. You’ll see them warm up, fight and cool down followed by photos with the group. For me, this is a must do whilst visiting in Japan - it’s heaped in tradition, very exciting to watch and all round very educational.

This tour was most definitely a highlight of our Japan experience. It was authentic and our tour guide explained to us the importance of being mindful of the sacred space we were about to experience whilst the wrestlers are training It is so much more spiritual than I knew Well worth the money and time if you are not visiting in Sumo season

I absolutely loved this experience and will treasure my time witnessing such a sacred and historically significant sport for the rest of my life!
