Overview

Our signature Ice Cave Tour! A 2-3 hour tour that allows you to experience the stunning blue caves of Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe. On this tour we venture to one of the more accessible ice caves for an encounter with ancient blue ice. The conditions of the ice caves are constantly changing. During the warmer summer months the ice caves are being formed by melted glacier water. In autumn each year we start looking for ice caves and find the most beautiful and safest caves to explore with you. This Season’s Unique Experience -Shaped by nature itself, you will explore a 30-70 meter blue Ice Cave -Each day, our expert guides carefully select the safest and most stunning blue Ice Cave for you to explore -Marvel at the vibrant blue hues hidden within the glacier -Enjoy the thrill of revelation as the ice cave suddenly appears amidst the moraine Perfect for most fitness levels and short winter days, with stunning photo opportunities around every corner!

Meeting points

The meeting point for our winter tours is at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. You will find our 4x4s on the main parking lot for big vehicles at the lagoon with the floating ice bergs next to the food trucks and bathrooms. Meet our guide at the 4x4 at least 15 minutes prior to your departure.

Itinerary

  • Glacier Lagoon

    We will meet you in the main parking lot of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. You will be fitted to the safety equipment that is included on your tour. We recommend wearing warm and comfortable outdoor clothing to keep dry in the always changing Icelandic winter weather. Please be at our 4x4 at least 15 minutes prior to the departure. Embark on the adventure in a 4x4 vehicle to the base of the glacier that is an adventure in itself. From there we hike 5-20 minutes up to the Ice Cave on uneven ground. As the glacier is always changing, the most beautiful and safest Ice Cave will be chosen depending on the conditions of each day. The Ice Caves range between 30-70 meters. You can expect other groups in the same area. With plenty of time for exploration, photos, and learning about glacial history from your guide, this will be an experience you’ll never forget.   • Operates in most weather conditions, please dress appropriately. Please come in warm and waterproof clothing and good hiking boots.
  • Your safety is of the utmost importance. Ice Cave tours are weather dependent. Sometimes tours have to be cancelled with short notice due to weather conditions or safety concerns or. After periods of adverse weather, the caves can become flooded or unsafe to enter. If this happens we will always do our best to offer an alternative such as a glacier hike if weather conditions allow, however if this is not suitable we will also always offer a full refund.

Worth every penny! Great day with unbelievable scenery.

I cannot say how amazing this day was. Our guide, Barbara, was terrific. She was patient, kind, funny and extremely knowledgeable. There was a massive storm coming in the evening we were there, and she and the other guides were sure to get us off the glacier in time to drive back to Vik before the storm hit. However, at no point did we feel rushed or feel like we missed anything. Safety was primary but they absolutely wanted us to have an excellent experience. The glacier hike and the caves were stunning. No words could really describe it. You have to go see for yourself, and I absolutely recommend Local Guide as your tour operator.

We loved this tour; as a family of four we were so lucky to share the tour with only another couple of people. Our guide Sam was so lovely and knowledgeable, she kept the tour engaging for all of us. She knew the area and could answer all sorts of questions, she was entertaining but also kept us feeling safe when the ice got a little slippy. She took us to a couple of caves and as we left we saw the size and busyness of some of the other tour operators. She timed us so well that we had a cave to ourselves! Could recommend more highly - this tour was an absolute highlight of our time in iceland.

Excellent tour, guide was amazing, travel to the glacier safe on snowy roads. A must do in the area. It really was just a cool experience that is fun to say you've done. We had our guide Asta. She was brilliant and so energetic. She was great with pictures, didn't rush anyone and answered all questions along the way.

Wow this trip was more than I could have imagined! Our tour driver Sam was so kind, helpful, and knowledgeable! The caves she guided us to would amazing truly had the best time and would recommend this trip and anyone visiting Iceland !!
