Overview

Please read carefully for all safety requirements and limitations for this tour before booking. This is a moderate to strenuous activity that may not be suitable for everyone. If you're seeking an active way to experience Puerto Rico's native environment, seize the opportunity with this combo adventure from San Juan! It includes a nature hike that will lead you to amazing natural pools, a waterfall, and waterslides, followed by a nighttime kayaking tour on the bioluminescent bay. These two natural wonders provide a fascinating look at the island's ecology. You will also enjoy an authentic Puerto Rican lunch between both activities to enhance your cultural experience (food cost not included in tour price).

Itinerary

  • El Yunque National Forest

Get adventurous, get muddy and get off the paved trail! Hike to explore different zones of the rain forest and enjoy beautiful views, natural pools and the Atlantic Ocean. Once we arrive to the skirts of El Yunque we will start with a 25-30 minute journey on a river-wading and rock scaling path to the river. You will see bamboo trees, flowers, and beautiful plants and experience rivers, waterfalls, and natural trails.  We will make a stop to visit a collecting pool that forms at the base of a small waterfall. Here you will have the opportunity to swim in its crystal clear waters, swing from a rope and enjoy the different tones of its deep pools. Then, after a few minutes of hiking and rock climbing to the upper sections (more strenuous), arrive at a natural river where you can swim, cliff jump, enjoy the natural water slides and small waterfalls. After the hike, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant (food cost not included) for about an hour to an hour and half.

    4 hours

  • Laguna Grande

We will then proceed heading East to join on the guided nighttime bioluminescent bay kayak tour. Experience the mystical mangrove channels leading to Laguna Grande. Look into the water to see the glowing pyrodinium bahamense, microscopic planktons capable of producing natural light at the touch of your hand or paddle (like fireflies). Admire these amazing organisms up close as you paddle on a 2-person kayak through the mangroves for an estimate of 30-minutes, and learn from your eco-tour guide about this fragile and unique ecosystem. Once reached the lagoon, you will have some time to play with the water (from within the kayak) and receive more information, before we head back to the mangrove channels for another kayaking journey of approximately 30 minutes .   Enjoy provided snacks at the end of the kayak tour, before returning to San Juan. Please note: The bio bay is an unpredictable natural phenomenon that may be influenced by multiple factors. Bioluminoscity level can vary from very visible to minimum or none without any previous notice. Full Moon phase may also affect the visibility of the bioluminescence. In the event of this happening alternate methods such as the use of a tarp will be incorporated in order to appreciate it.

Must do activity!

Published on May, 2025

Wonderful experience hiking the rainforest and kayaking through mangroves! It was a very long day almost 13 hours, with easy hotel pick up at 9:15am and drop off 10pm. The hiking part was almost 3-4 hrs long then they took us to a restaurant for lunch. From restaurant we got picked up by different guide around 5pm and he took us to the lagoon for bio bay. Jason, our tour guide for rainforest, was great! He made sure that we were safe and was very considerate of different strength levels of the group members. Natural waterslide was the best part! Biotour was a great experience. Almost 3 miles of kayaking thru mangroves was fun! We did not able to see the full affect because of the full moon. They used the tarps over our kayaks to see the planktons glow. Overall a great experience!!

This was a great hike! We had the tour guide Hannah and she did a phenomenal job of explaining what we were seeing in the rainforest, making sure everyone was safe and comfortable with the activities we were doing! The water activities were a lot of fun and the scenery was gorgeous. A must do tour in Puerto Rico.

Great time in El Yunque

Adriana was an amazing tour guide. She was fun and happy and you can just tell she loves what she does. She made our hike a great time and made climbing and jumping fearless! Bio Bay was a fun kayak tour but a bit difficult with such a large group. We didn’t see much but we still had fun. Bring bug spray!

Great experience

An AMAZING full day out in Puerto Rico!!

Published on Apr, 2025

We loved this all-day adventure!! Highly recommend but know that it is a long day!! The hike and all the water activities in the rainforest were a blast!!! The part of the rainforest park we went to was crowded - just to set expectations that it will not feel like you are lost in nature! But the tour groups there handled the crowds really well - everyone waited patiently to try all the natural features!! Our guide, Jason, was OUTSTANDING!!! High energy and made us all feel very positive about the experience!!! The weather in March was perfect to enjoy this - the temps weren't too hot and the water was comfortable. The bio bay kayaking was really fun and beautiful to see the bioluminescence in the bay!! We all thought it was a great day. There are a few things I would recommend to make this day the most enjoyable: 1) Bring snacks or be sure to buy them when they make a stop on the drive to the rainforest 2) Go ahead and snack when you get back on the bus after the rainforest. It is not a long drive to the restaurant but you go to a local place and it takes a while to serve all the meals - totally understandable and I wouldn't change a thing about it bc the lunch was delicious but if you tend to get hangry at all, go ahead and snack on the bus on the way to lunch to make the long/leisurely lunch more pleasant. And a long, slow lunch is great bc there is no rush to get to kayaking until it's dark anyway. 3) bring multiple changes of clothing. You get wet during both activities and it's nice to be in dry clothes for the bus ride and lunch. this isn't critical but a recommendation. 4) use bug spray LIBERALLY for the kayak - and do not be afraid to wear long sleeves and shirts with hoods for the kayaking part even if it is hot. you can splash water to cool off. My son and I thought we sprayed a lot and we were eaten alive on the row out to the bay. my husband had on a long sleeve shirt with a hood and sprayed that and wasn't bothered nearly as much by the bugs. Do all that and you are going to have an AMAZING day out!!! We LOVED it!!!
