Overview

At Zipaquirá, 50 kilometers coming out from the north side of Bogotá, is the largest salt mine in Colombia. Although the mines date back to the time of the Muiscas, primitive inhabitants of the region, it has been intensively exploited, and they continue to have enormous reserves. In the heart of the mountain, an underground salt cathedral was dug, constituting a monumental work of engineering, architecture, and design. With a capacity of 10,000 people, it is the most visited tourist attraction in Colombia.

    After leaving Bogotá, travel to the salt cathedral of Zipaquirá and admire one of the most extraordinary achievements of Colombian architecture. The salt cathedral of Zipaquirá, built in the depths of the largest salt rock reserve in the world, is a mystical place where the pre-Columbian Muisca culture, the environment, and religious heritage are mixed together.

A Sublime Journey into the Depths of Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral

I recently had the opportunity to take a tour to the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral, my second tour with this company, and it was nothing short of amazing. The tour was well-organized, starting from the pick-up at our hotel to the journey to Zipaquirá. The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the Salt Cathedral itself. The atmosphere inside the cathedral was surreal and awe-inspiring. The intricate carvings, the play of light and shadow, and the sheer grandeur of the cathedral carved out of salt left us speechless. It's a testament to human ingenuity and a sight that I believe everyone should experience at least once. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. Out of all the group listings for tours to Zipaquirá and the Salt Cathedral, we are very pleased we chose this one. Ana was an amazing guide, sharing her knowledge of the history and culture of Bogotá and Zipaquirá. We had plenty of time to explore the salt cathedral on our own and Ana and our driver Cesar promptly picked us up when we were finished. Highly recommend this quick trip out of the city!
