    The church as we know it today was founded by Henry III in the 13th century, who ordered the demolition of Edward the Confessor’s royal palace and a monastery situated on the site. In its place, a new Gothic cathedral was built that was consecrated in 1269: From now on, by decree of the King of England, Westminster Abbey was to be a place for the coronation and burial of monarchs. - Royal Tombs, Today, over 3,000 people are buried or memorialised at Westminster Abbey, including 30 monarchs and notable historical figures such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Stephen Hawking and Geoffrey Chaucer. - The Coronation Chair in St George’s Chapel is perhaps the most famous piece of furniture in the world. - Poet’s Corner - Explore the Lady Chapel & Chapter House - Royal Tombs - Unknown Warrior - Pyx Chamber - The Quire - Cloisters

This is marvellous visit for those interested in history, architecture and all things church and royals related. We had pre booked tickets for 10:30. We arrived about 10:10 and were allowed to join the queue. We were in a little before 10:30 despite the queue. The audio guide is excellent allowing you to tour at your own pace and backtrack or repeat sections of interest. There are many historical and royal individuals interred in the Abbey. Stephen Hawking probably the most recent. Amongst many others are Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and Oliver Cromwell. The most poignant being the grave of the unknown soldier. Is quite busy with visitors but we didn't feel crowded out or rushed. You go at your own pace. We were in the Abbey a little over an hour. Once you've handed back your headphones and player there's still a bit more to see on your way out including the cloisters and gardens. A worthwhile visit.

The Abbey was interesting and beautiful. Be sure to allow extra time to get here. Traffic as very congested. It took us 45 minutes to travel 2 miles.

The self guided tour is a great way to visit the Abbey. The church is beautiful with so much interesting history.

Really good to get close and appreciate the amazing art and architecture. We had a bit of a queue to get in despite prebooking but well worth the wait. The extra charge for the gallery was also worth a visit giving a bird's-eye view of the cathedral as well as additional art and history up close.
