Overview

Explore New Zealand’s geothermal landscapes at your own pace on this independent  Waimangu hiking tour. Follow rugged hiking trails through the Waimangu region, and take in top natural attractions like Frying Pan Lake, Inferno Crater Lake, and Lake Rotomahana. Trek past the unique craters and steaming geysers, and capture the spectacular scenery on camera. At the end of your hike, return to your starting point via the shuttle bus.

  • Waimangu Volcanic Valley

    Check in at the Waimangu Volcanic Valley and pick up your Wanderer Guide. You may also like to download the free Waimangu App. Then follow the walking trails through the valley at your own pace. There are a number of different options to take depending on how much time and energy you have. Marvel at the stunning geothermal attractions as you learn about the history and legacy of the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the Tarawera eruption and the now hidden Pink and White Terraces.

Very scenic self guided walk. Easy tracks and information signs to guide you. Nicely organised bus to take you back to the start. Lots of birds to look at on your way!

Interesting, stunning scenery on this walk! So many amazing things to learn while looking at incredible nature! We all thoroughly enjoyed this walk and actually wish we had longer to enjoy all the birds at the end before catching the lake boat tour, which was peaceful and lovely. We liked that this was at our own pace, just us. Walk truly is mostly flat or downhill, easy. And then a bus brings you back up at the end.

We were trying to decide which of Te Puia, Waiotapu, and Waimangu to visit - we only had time for one and were traveling with our 4 and 6 year old. Based on reviews, we got the sense that Waimangu was the most natural and active - and we were so glad that’s what we chose! It’s set up as a there and back hike but the bus runs in both directions so you can decide how to do it. The trail is very kid friendly and the only steps were just before bus stop 1 to see the Inferno Crater which was by far the highlight in my opinion. We were there in the afternoon (park closed at 5, last bus from the lake returns around 4:30) and while it did not feel crowded AT ALL, the bus back was standing room only. Definitely worth visit!
