Overview

Leave Siena behind and hike part of Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route through rural Tuscany, followed by a wine tasting in the village of Monteriggioni. Embark on a 5-mile (8-km) trek that passes through the heart of the Tuscan countryside, past picturesque castles, villages, vineyards and ruins. Once you reach the medieval walled village of Monteriggioni, reward yourself during a wine tasting session, where you will sip on 3-4 different local, organic wines. Return to Siena at your own leisure by bus (bus tickets provided).

Itinerary

Meet at the Siena train station (in front of pharmacy) at 9:00am. Give your mind a peaceful rest from the noise of the crowded towns and follow your expert guide on a pleasant walk along the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrim's route that became the main artery to reach Rome throughout the Middle Ages. This route - a spiritual pilgrimage as well as a wealthy trade route - enjoyed today by pilgrims and hikers alike enable you to experience the beauty of the Tuscan countryside and the glory of its medieval past, still present in its wonderfully preserved castles and villages. Walk through forests and fields, vineyards and olive groves from Siena to the imposing fortress of Monteriggioni, a medieval town built by the Sienese as a bastion of defense in their wars against Florence. In Monteriggioni you will enjoy a guided tasting of local organic wines before enjoying leisure time to explore the town. You will be given a bus ticket to return to Siena at your own leisure (bus stop is nearby with multiple return options). Suitable for anyone in good physical condition, comfortable clothing and shoes are highly recommended.

Wonderful walk in the country

What a lovely experience! We enjoyed a leisurely walk in the countryside, and learned about the history of the route and the surrounding area. Our guide, Cecco (forgive my spelling; it’s probably waaaay off) was fantastic. He was so knowledgeable, pointing out various plants and their uses. We really enjoyed our walk, and the wine tasting at the end was lovely—excellent wines paired with snacks. This was a great day out of the city!

I highly recommend the hiking tour. While November is off season, the automnal colours coupled with the beauty of Tuscany nature was a success! Not only was I transported by the landscapes but the guide was of great company, passionate by Tuscany, explaining me the history of the place and trail we were taking, teaching me about edible plants and herbs that we could directly taste as well as sharing nice insights about life in general. Finally, the wine tasting was a warm and nice moment, where I could learn about Monte Chiaro family and the different wines they make, thanks to generous workers there. It was a real immersion !

Fabulous! Great guide, perfect weather (late October), great like minded group of hikers. Was a good few hours (almost 4) of hiking but fairly flat and not a fast pace. Definitely recommend. The town of Monterriggioni at the end was the icing on the cake.
