Overview

With such a rich History, Heritage and a story to tell, a trip to The Queenstown Story @ Cobh Heritage Centre is a must. This beautiful, informative cultural centre is inventively situated within Cobh's restored Victorian Railway station, a building holding its own historic story. Given that so many from Ireland's past travelled through Cobh(Queenstown), one of the world's finest natural harbours, visitors can learn historic and emotive recounts of The Queenstown Story, where over three million Irish people emigrated from this port town in search of a new life. Everything from the sinking of the Titanic and The Lusitania, to the transportation of the forgotten Irish who endured forced labour in Cromwellian times to the West Indies and American Colonies as well as the stories of emigration to Canada and North America, is inventively displayed in a variety of modern, tasteful and artistic ways. Excellent museum experience!

Excellent interactive museum. We were given the name of an emigrant to follow through the museum as if we were the one experiencing it. Very clever way to keep us engaged. We also enjoyed an amazing Irish scone with cream and jam, and an excellent cuppa.

The immigration story

We visited the center and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of following a passenger through their journey. I had an opportunity to work with Christy Keating who is the genealogist. In the brief time we spent together, he was able to help me find the homes of ancestors in Ireland, which was very impactful. I will continue to correspond with him as his resources are bountiful and will hopefully help me to find more details.

An interesting museum

Well worth a visit . The exhibition is detailed and interesting . It tells the story of the people leaving Ireland for a better life . The Titanic story is told and the sinking of the Lusitania . You hear the stories of the survivors . The staff were helpful and friendly . There is a tea room , shop and toilets

A fascinating museum to visit.

Such a warm welcome on a very cold January afternoon, the staff were so friendly and helpful. We had the museum to ourselves and were completely absorbed as we walked through the different sections. The stories were very moving and the artifacts fascinating. We learnt a great deal about the different stages of Irish history and the effects of emigration on Ireland and its people. I would definitely recommend a visit to this charming and moving museum.
