Booked for the above self guided tour. On the day itself, before the driver sets off, a guide was there to provide us with maps & very useful information pertaining to the trip. Despite it being a self guided tour, the guide is always available via WhatsApp. I like how the schedule runs; about 6hrs for Rila Lakes & one full hr for Rila Monastery. That’s ample time for both spots. In fact, a day before the tour, the guide already dropped us certain crucial reminders (weather,dress code,food options etc). That’s much appreciated. The driver is also very punctual in bringing us from one point to the other. I would highly recommend anyone who’s looking to head to Rila to book direct with them.
This tour is the perfect way to get an overarching idea of the history of Bulgaria. It really helped put what you're seeing into context. Unfortunately, we arrived slightly late so we don't remember our guide's name (28th Morning tour) but he was brilliant - his story telling really brought the tour alive. We appreciated his anecdotes and thoughtful analysis of the events he was covering.
This day trip is a must for all travelers who visit Bulgaria. Rila Monastery is the most impressive monastery in this beautiful and friendly country. I was very fortunate to have Alexander as my private tour guide and driver. I learned a lot about the history, religion, art and music in Bulgaria because Alexander is a professor in these topics. I have found that the most beautiful monasteries in the entire Balkan countries are in Bulgaria. I also enjoyed immensely the conversations I had with Alexander.
2 hour bus journey each way and 4 hours or so in the Plovdiv. I took the 2 hour guided tour in English with guide Sonya who was very knowledgeable. It was a fascinating day tracing the history of this European City of Culture 2019 - Roman sites abound, a mosque from the times of the Ottoman Empire, colourful Bulgarian revival architecture, Eastern Orthodox churches (old and new) all interspersed with Communist era and modern architecture and a lot of cobbled streets!
I would like to express my gratitude to my guide Vasil in Sofia city, who was kind enough to show me around without cancelling my tour, as I was the only one who showed up on that day. I appreciate it a lot, as it was my only day and chance to explore the city. The tour was quite interesting and informative about the capital of Bulgaria. The most beautiful and main historical sights and attractions were shown. Vasil is professional and very knowledgeable about the history and other aspects of his country and he replied on all my questions with respect, confidence and patience. I would recommend Vasil to all tourists visiting hospitable Bulgaria, you will definitely not regret it!
Just back from an epic 3-day ride with Trail2Extreme in the Rila Mountains, Bulgaria Massive thanks to Gary and Danny for an unforgettable experience — from airport pickup and traditional Bulgarian food to a great hotel in Borovets and well-prepped KTMs (250s, a 350, and the option of 300 2Ts), everything was spot on. The riding was superb — forest singletrack, steep rocky climbs, deep muddy ruts, and sweeping mountain trails. It was challenging in all the right ways but kept at a pace that suited the group. One of the highlights was visiting Black Rock — a stunning viewpoint with dramatic scenery, but also a place with a dark past. It was used as an execution site during the communist era. Haunting, powerful, and a reminder of Bulgaria’s deep history. Gary and Danny kept everything running smoothly and wrapped it all up with a brilliant barbecue and a few cold beers.
