Overview

IN-DEPTH 2 HOUR POLITICAL MURAL HISTORY TOUR Every city has it’s shopping and coffee culture but Belfast city has a unique past after coming out of 30 years of conflict.Your guides are the original  drivers who had to transport their communities through the bullets and bombs of THE TROUBLES and have their lives at risk every time they seat in their black cabs. The North of Ireland has become famous for the murals painted in almost every area of the country . These pictures of IRA ,UVF murals are often flashed around the world on news bulletins or used as a backdrop when interviewing people. They often depict the history and political views of both traditions and are a way of marking territory. These wall paintings often look intimidating but they have become as much of a tourist attraction as many of the regular attractions within Belfast and beyond.

Itinerary

  • Bobby Sands Mural

    Falls road Belfast the heart of Republicanism and the birth place of the Provisional Irish Republican Army. You guide will give you a full detailed account off history from a Republican point of view and you will be able to get a photo of the worlds most famous mural Bobby sands.

  • Divis

    Divis flats is the start of the Falls road and welcome mural depicting everyone is welcome. You guide will explain about the British having the army base on the top 3 floors and using people as human sheilds and explain the burning of Falls road 1969 by loyalist and 800 years of Irish history

  • Clonard Monastery

    Clonard monastery is iconic with the people of west Belfast. This is the heart of the Catholic faith for many and hosted the secret peace talks between Gerry Adams and John Hume.

  • Shankill Road

    The heart of the loyalist community and birth place of the UVF /UDA dating back to 455AD. Your guide will tell you in detail about the murals painted by locals on family homes. 800 years of British history will be told in detail and how people still our loyal to the British crown.

    Built in the 1800s and housed most of the notorious political prisoners.It also was a hanging jail right to the 60s. With a tunnel under the road leading to Crumlin road court house.

    Bobby Sands IRA volunteer MP mural on the side of Sinn Fein head quarters and opposite the former blacken tans base The Falls Library.Your guide will give you a in-depth history of the 1981 hunger strike,

A first hand recollection of the Troubles

David, our host gave us a first person view of how the Troubles impacted him and his family. As he discussed those very difficult times , friends and neighbors waved and went about their business. He took time to answer lots of questions and give us a view of today's Belfast. I am old enough to remember the 1970-1980 conflict and it put a personal face on it. I think the standard deviation of tour guides is high and David is at the top of the list........highly recommended.
