Overview

Bandra became a part of Mumbai only in 1950. Prior to that, it was a separate municipality, and before that, till the mid-19th century, a separate island. In the 16th century, the North Konkan coast came under the control of the Portuguese and Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries began to forcibly convert the population to Christianity.When the Portuguese handed over the seven islands of Bombay to the British, Bandra was not part of the deal. And so, Bandra has a slightly different history from Bombay, and that has a part to play in Bandra retaining its Indo-Portuguese Roman Catholic character in spite of wide-scale development. Although I have lived in Mumbai all my life and visited Bandra atleast once every month, doing this jeep ride with Jimmy brought in a completely new perspective. He showed us spaces which we would have either never found or even if we found them never known what to they stood for. Thank you Jimmy. Also a big thank you to Javed bhai for skilfully manoeuvring the narrow bylanes of Bandra so smoothly. This is the first of the many south Mumbai walks I plan to do with Khaki and Jimmy. BTW we also passed through one the very early houses of Bappi Lahiri in Chuim village. Felt like serendipity !!!! Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy.... aaja aaja aaja !!!!

Rediscovery of the sights and sounds of Bandra

It was an exciting experience -discovering places and little tidbits of historical story that I knew nothing about despite being a Bandra resident for a very long time. The quaint village atmosphere in the midst of a big city like Mumbai was indeed very interesting especially when it comes with stories and pieces of local gossip! An open jeep ride on a cool January morning - who could ask for more! Juzer, Jimmy and Javed the J trio are founts of knowledge when it comes to Bandra and its surroundings ! All in all a great trip and highly recommended for both residents of Mumbai and tourists!

Excellent Open Jeep Tour

We did the Bandra Open Jeep Tour to take our guests from Germany to see the Queen of Suburbs. Our host Ram was excellent, with well researched information and snippets. We also saw houses of many Bollywood stars. The highlight of the tour was definitely the village tour. The tour widened our perspective of Bandra. Would highly recommend the Open Jeep Tour.

Fantastic tour! Our guide Ram and driver Javed were excellent. We leant a lot about the history of Bandra and its relationship with that of Mumbai/India. We also drove by the homes of many Bollywood celebrities. Highly recommend this tour!
