Lucca's walls remain in place after centuries and surround the entire city. They are some 20 feet high from the inside, reached by several reasonably sloped on-ramps. On the outside the town is surrounded mostly by meadows some 40-60 feet below your path. It's a great way to get the feel of the city which, retaining its medieval character, is a maze of streets winding through 3- and 4-story buildings and makes it difficult to absorb more than the block you are standing in. You can of course shorten your walk by cutting directly across the city at some point instead of making the entire circuit.
