Overview

Being the Dinosaur Capital of the World, Drumheller offers visitors the world-class Royal Tyrrell Museum which takes visitors into the not-so-distant past when dinosaurs roamed the earth. It houses the world's largest displays of dinosaurs and Canada's only museum dedicated exclusively to paleontology. The region is called the Badlands, and back when the dinosaurs were around, the area provided the perfect conditions to create fossils – lots of them! In fact, some of the most important fossil discoveries were found in this area and many of them now live in museums around the world. With that said, Drumheller offers a lot more than just dinosaur fossils. In fact, there are a ton of awesome things to do in Drumheller including scenic flights and historic tours. You’ll find cute restaurants here and plenty of hiking trails. Honestly, it’s such a fun place to visit and you’ll keep busy exploring all the best things to do and see in Drumheller.

  • Horseshoe Canyon

    Experience this 3.9-km loop trail near Rosebud, Alberta. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 3 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and snowshoeing. Horseshoe Canyon near Drumheller is a popular place to experience the beauty of the badlands, an ancient landscape of heavily eroded soft rock. Dinosaurs found in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation include Albertavenator, Albertosaurus, Anchiceratops, Anodontosaurus, Arrhinoceratops and Atrociraptor to name a few! Try your luck and find a few! They still find fossils today!

Amazing Experience with Sue at Drumheller Museum! I had an incredible time visiting the Drumheller Museum, and I can't recommend it enough! Our guide, Sue, was absolutely fantastic—she went above and beyond in every way. Her energy made the tour both fun and informative, bringing the exhibits to life with fascinating stories and insights. The museum itself was spectacular, filled with captivating displays that showcase the area's rich history and stunning fossils. Sue's passion for the subject really shone through, making the entire experience memorable. If you’re planning a visit, definitely request Sue as your guide! You won’t be disappointed!

A brilliant day out at Drumheller

This was a totally unexpected bonus trip, we went not expecting much and it far exceeded our expectations. We went to the information centre in Drumheller and we were given a map and a route to drive which was perfect ! We started at the Tyrell Dinosaur Museum, it was simply stunning, just an amazing place to see original dinosaur skeletons and bones. It's very informative, mind blowing and just awe inspiring. We then drove to Horsethief Canyon which was just great to see, we followed this by driving to a free ferry ride across the river. We headed back to the Hoodoos, payed a small amount for parking and had a wander around them. It's quite a long drive but well worth it.

Wonderful Tour

Sue was lovely, she picked us up right outside our hotel, so we did not need to worry about traveling anywhere ourselves first. Perfect for us as we did not have a car. The tour group was quite small, which meant Sue could be very accommodating about what we and the other people on the tour wanted to do. I had been very excited about the Royal Tyrrell Museum trip, so she planned for my boyfriend and me to stay for as long as we liked while offering other options to the other participants if they did not want to stay longer. We ended up spending over 5 hours at the museum! The walk through Horseshoe Canyon was beautiful, and not too difficult with only a short flight of stairs down to the bottom of the canyon and an easy flat path once down there. We visited at the end of the tour, so the sun was starting to set as we walked, really highlighting the canyon walls. We and the other tour group participants had nothing else planned for the rest of the day so Sue prolonged the tour, allowing us to get as much out of the day at Drumheller as possible. Sue was very social and entertained us the entire drive to Drumheller (which was over an hour's drive from Calgary).

Such an amazing tour of Drumheller. The landscape was unique and the museum was world class. Sue was such a wonderful guide and was so accommodating. Would highly recommend.
