Overview

Our flagship tour, a favorite for the inquisitive traveller who wants to know more than the usual. This tour is a must-do for anyone who wants to understand the history of Cochin from the basics. From being called the 'Emporium of the World', Cochin received the rare distinction as the 'Queen of the Arabian Sea' and in modern times the city transformed itself to become one of India's major tourist hubs and a contemporary art capital still bringing travellers from far and wide. The walk will take you along the remnants of the old European fort town and its stories, some of its streets rich with fables of yore and the iconic people who left a mark and changed the course of history as we know it. We sift through 3000 years of the city's past through stories, anecdotes, architecture, culture, food and the people who made an impact in the growth of the town.

I'm born in Kochi and I have grown up in this city knowing its rich cultural heritage. Signing up for Kochi Heritage Project's curated private walk "A Queen's story" made me realise everything I've known about my hometown is just tip of the iceberg. My friend and I signed up for the 3 hour walk, ended up spending 5 hours, and it felt like 5 mins! Time flew with Johann's captivating storytelling. Me being Kochi Latin Catholic and her being Brazilian, Johann shared stories of the Portugese influence that interconnects our cultures. Although it was not a food tour, we had a refreshments stop at 8th Bastion, where Johann introduced us dishes that were Kochi's signature yet lesser known cosmopolitan culinary nuances. We had soo much fun during every conversation, I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Fort Kochi, travellers or natives like myself - this initiative Johann and his team has nurtured so passionately offers an authentic, honest and wholesome experience rather than a touristy one ;)

A must-do on your trip to Fort Kochi

We traveled as a couple to Kochi trip at the end of Feb. We decided to book a walking tour to get a better sense of the history and culture of Fort Kochi than just going through museums. The Kochi Heritage Project had good reviews, so we booked with them. Johann was our storyteller/guide, and we were joined by a French tourist couple too. Johann was knowledgeable and friendly, has done so much research, and could tailor the tour to the themes that we were interested in. We spent three hours walking about Fort Kochi and didn't realize how fast time flew by. For the rest of our stay in Kochi, we were recognizing buildings or referring to anecdotes and facts that he had told us about the city. Doing this tour really helps travellers understand and appreciate the rich history of a fascinating place. It was one of the best walking tours we've done, and we plan to book a different tour with them next time we visit. Highly recommended!

Johann made four hours feel like one. The tour was incredibly engaging, and he is extremely knowledgeable. You navigate Kochi's history as if you were a part of it, making you eager to learn more and ask questions. It seamlessly ties together history, culture, and—of course—food. And you get to be part of it. You begin to see your surroundings from a new perspective, where every little stone has a story to tell. Johann deeply cares about his home and is passionately committed to keeping its history alive, giving back to his community through storytelling. You can tell that he loves what he does—it comes straight from the heart. Kochi is a true melting pot of cultures—Dutch, Arabic, Portuguese... you name it. What a wonderful gateway to the South of India! I 100% recommend this tour!
