Overview

Berchtesgaden holds so much historical value with regards to World War II. During the Third Reich the Obersalzberg was the Southern Headquarters for the National Socialist Party with many top leaders owning homes here, and many important political decisions made here. This private tour is perfect for those wishing to discover this history... This half day tour covers the famous Eagle's Nest and many of the other historically important sites on the Obersalzberg, including the more hidden locations that most tourists never hear about. While there are many tour options that include this area, most will only stop off at the most well known spots. This tour also includes the secrets hidden on the mountain which really provide an authentic account of the fascinating history of this area. In addition, the mountain scenery is extremely beautiful and on a clear day you will be surrounded by stunning panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps and the valley below, particularly from the Eagle's Nest.

    The opportunity to visit an original section of the vast underground bunker complex buried deep below the former compound; explore the meandering labyrinth of twisting tunnels and cavernous chambers.

    The highlight of this tour is a visit to the famous Eagle's Nest perched atop the Kehlstein mountain at 6, 017ft. Exploring the fascinating history of Hitler's teahouse including the original features, such as the huge marble fireplace and the famous brass elevator. PLEASE NOTE: The Eagle's Nest is only open May - October, depending on weather. If visiting November - April: Although not being able to visit the Eagle's Nest building itself, an in-depth historical account of the Eagle's Nest, using period photos to explain the historical significance of the building is included in this tour. Additionally, there will be an extended driving tour of Berchtesgaden to stop off at other WWII historical sites along the way.

My family of four took Tom Lewis' Discover Eagle's Nest tour in October 2024 and had a fantastic time! I had always wanted to visit Eagle's Nest and was excited to learn that a private guided tour was possible. I'm so glad we took this tour. It was a fascinating experience having history come to life before us. Whether that was walking the actual grounds of Hitler's former Berghof, visiting the Eagle's Nest itself, or seeing the vast tunnel system that had been built into the mountains. In addition, the tour is made even better by Tom being such an amazing guide. He's friendly, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable about this subject and era. He's a true historian who patiently answered our many questions. He was also very responsive to my email inquiries prior to taking the tour. For anyone with an interest in this important era in world history, this is an amazing tour -- highly recommended!

We booked this tour for 8 adults travelling through Europe by car in September. Amy emailed me offering a private tour. She was amazing, full of valuable information 4 hours of walking, talking, and photos. Great value for money, I would highly recommend using this company

We really enjoyed this tour and can highly recommend it to all who are interested in this topic! Tom is a friendly and very, very knowledgeable guide. Speaks clear English. He gave us a clear and detailed description of the various sites we went to, the time schedule was well build up, we skipped all lines and we went to the ground were the Berghof used to be. He picked us up on time at the hotel and drove us around the sites. It was not cheap but we thought it was worth it to get private tour in which you can ask a lot of questions (and he could answer them all) instead of being in a very large group. For people who want more inside info than a basic group tour provides.
