Very interesting walking tour focused on the Cold War and the Berlin Wall.

I really enjoyed yesterday’s tour with Jasper. He was fun, friendly and very knowledgeable, and clearly has an interest in history and politics. The tour is designed to bring everyone up to speed quickly on the German history starting after the end of WWII. Jasper had a folder of illustrations—maps, old photos, etc—that I assume the company provides to give consistency across different guides. A large part of the tour is focused on the Wall, which is obviously the literal incarnation of the Cold War, but I would have liked some additional info on other aspects, as well. That said, the 3 hours went by quickly and I was very happy with it. The highlight was the Wall Memorial and I learned a lot about the technical aspects of the wall, along with its human impact, which Jasper kept in appropriate focus. An unexpected bonus was a little time spent in the subway and information that was new to me about how the subway continued to function through the Cold War, driving right through East Berlin and “ghost stations”.
