The lacy coastal road that begins in the Athenian suburb of Glyfada and winds its way through Vouliagmeni and Lagonisi to reach Cape Sounio is one of Attica’s most sublime routes. Small beaches with their sandy shores or rocky stretches, crystal-clear sparkling water and a perfectly blue sky accompany you along the way and delight the senses, mind and soul of anyone taking this gorgeous route to get to one of Greece’s most idyllic spots, Cape Sounio. From a distance, your gaze is captivated by the ruins of the temple of Poseidon, commanding, stunning, a characteristic example of classical architecture of the 5th century BC. This is the spot that the ancient Athenians chose to honor their god Poseidon, within a fortress constructed to protect their coastline. Vouliagmeni (Pass By)

Cape Sounion is the promontory at the southernmost tip of the Attic peninsula, 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) south of the town of Lavrio (ancient Thoricus), and 70 kilometers (43 mi) southeast of Athens. It is part of Lavreotiki municipality, East Attica. It is 59.6 km away from Athens. Cape Sounion is noted for its Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. Its remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea.

The ancient Greek temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, built during 444–440 BC, is one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. A Doric temple, overlooks the sea at the end of Cape Sounion, at a height of almost 60 meters (200 ft).

Lake Vouliagmeni

If the option "Without food" is selected, during our return to the city of Athens, we will stop at one of the most idyllic places. Vouliagmeni Lake, in the heart of the Athenian Riviera, is the hidden treasure of Attica's nature. Lake Vouliagmeni ("Sunken Lake") is a small brackish-water lake fed by underground currents seeping through the mass of Mount Hymettus located to the south of Vouliagmeni.

If the option "With Traditional Greek Food" is selected, we make a stop at a seaside tavern near the coastal city of Anavyssos to enjoy authentic Greek cuisine and traditional foods.

The Temple of Poseidon at Sounio is closing 30 minutes before the sunset. The sunset from November to April is around 17:00.
Our drivers are not official tour guides, but they are knowledgeable and can provide fascinating commentary in fluent English. Although they will not enter the archaeological sites with you, they can answer all of your questions about the places you visit with this tour.
Third party activities and especially extreme sports are not allowed during the tour. This can be a cause for immediate cancellation of the tour.

Temple of Poseidon Day Trip

It is a relaxing great 1/2 day trip outside of Athens. The coast is lovely and the solitude at the temple was impressive. We were there during the day on a sunny calm December AM. Picked out our fresh sea bass from their ice chest and had a memorable lunch looking out at the sea. Our guide Aris taught us about celebrating the holidays in December in Greece.

We had an amazing evening with Yiannis M who drove us from our airbnb in Athens out to the see the gorgeous sunset at Cape Sounio / Temple of Poseidon. We also stopped for a couple additional photos along the way. He was highly knowledgeable, friendly, fun and also a great driver! There were 3 of us and we were super comfortable in Yiannis' car. Highly recommend!

This was a great tour down the coast to Cape Sounio! Nikos was our driver and guide and he was fantastic. It was a gorgeous drive down the coast and the time at Temple of Poseidon. While sunset visits are popular, we were there in the morning and it was so quiet. We thought it was much more enjoyable experience than the Parthenon. You could get close and take your time without all the crowds. We added the lunch option and Nikos took us to a wonderful family seaside restaurant with time to relax. It was a great tour.
