Savanna La Mar (Pass By)

Savanna-la-Mar was originally established as a settlement in Spanish Jamaica. In 1780, the town was completely destroyed by a powerful hurricane known as Savanna-la-Mar hurricane. It was rebuilt, as the port was an important part of the Atlantic trade in sugar, slaves and other goods. After Great Britain abolished slavery in 1833 and before the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865, its officials in the Caribbean colonies, at times ordered the examination of slaves on American ships that happened to come to its Caribbean ports, to see if they wanted to stay in the colony and gain freedom, or return with the ship to the United States and slavery. In the cases of the Enterprise at Bermuda in 1835 and the Creole at Nassau in 1841-1842, more than 200 slaves gained freedom. On 20 July 1855, Jamaicans boarded the United States Brig Young America, which had docked into Savanna-la-Mar.

What a memorable day it has been so far! Now you are at the Riverside Dock where you will have lunch. After lunch, you will meet with your Safari Tour Guide who is very knowledgeable & well prepared - eager to take you on a wild journey up the Black River. There you will get all the information on the Black River and its wildlife, including endemic bird species, crabs, rare or endemic plants such as water lilies and others - North American crocodiles and Tarpons also occupy their space in the Black River. Get your cameras ready as your Safari Captain call the crocodiles, feed them chicken meat and pet them - no, your tour guide is not crazy but they have an excellent relationship with their friends from the Safari and are ready to share their experience and expertise with you! You might even see local fishers snorkeling the river collecting their crab traps or spear fishing right there among the crocodiles and other wildlife - and no, they're not crazy! It's just a way of life!

YS Falls

Come with us on a memorable journey to the lush, green south coast of Jamaica! This ride takes you through the small farming villages where a large number of the locals and happy fisher folks will wave at you as you go by. Ask your tour guide about the myriad of local fruits and peppered shrimp when you get in the town of Middle Quarters, otherwise known as "shrimp Country". You arrive at YS Falls, get checked in and board the tractor jitney that will take you on a 10 minutes ride through the 2,600 acres property and up to the falls. The YS Falls property is home to horses, cattle, massive gwango and mango trees. You will be in awe as you make your way through the lush, green vegetation with crystal clear water streaming through the forest. At the YS Falls you can soak yourself in the 100% natural pools and cascades, swing on Tarzan Ropes, swim, etc. It is the perfect choice for a romantic getaway. Take advantage of the Zipline Canopy or Tubing while you are there (extra cost).

Awesome day out

Brilliant day trip visiting this wonderful part of Jamaica . The YS falls are beautiful and the guides that take you across the rocks are fantastic and will take all your photos for you . The black river boat trip was great getting up real close to the crocs and very educational too if you love the wildlife. Our guide was giving us all the history of Jamaica and life on the island on the drive down which from Montego Bay is around 2 hours so be prepared for a bouncy ride as the roads are worse than the uk ( if that’s even possible) but well worth the travel time for such a great experience.

Worth the time and money

Clive (the driver) was fun and knowledgeable and even stopped for us to be able to buy some sunscreen from a local place and avoid the resort prices, although the cheapest sunscreen was actually at YS Falls' gift shop. The drive from Negril was roughly 1.5 hours and you get to see a lot of the island. There are tour guides when you get to the falls, they try to keep you moving to avoid groups getting bunched up and crowding the various pools, try to go early in the day to avoid the crowds. The lower pools are fine for enjoying the experience so you can get through the upper pools first and relax later. There is also interesting wild life and scenery to explore as it is very much like a public park in the States. The lunch at the Black River tour was great. Fried chicken with pineapple sauce, red peas and rice, and curried goat are served buffet style belong side Papaya juice and water. You only get one trip but they serve you enough that you won't need another. The tour is fun and you'll see some crocodiles and fish and birds, the more questions you ask, the better it will be.

YS falls & Black river boat safari

Both were great tours. Enjoyed the Black River Safari. The boat operator had such great humour that I could have lived on that boat forever. He kept us overwhelmingly entertained! We laughed so much. Crocodile sightings were great & amazing. Thank you for a great boat tour.

Don't miss it, well worth the cost

Very happy with the whole day and would recommend it. Initially, quite a long drive (from Negril) but it gave us chance to see some of the countryside. The boat trip up the river was interesting with the chance to see the various crocodiles in their natural habitat. They are clearly quite use to seeing all of the boats on the river and seemed quite docile but definitely would not risk a dip in the water with them. The pilot/guide on the boat was very informative and entertaining, with a lunch at the end of the trip which was more than adequate. After lunch we were then taken to the falls which was very pleasant. Due to my wife not walking very well, we did not walk fully up the falls or swim in the pools. Nevertheless, all the other guests there seeming to be fully enjoying themselves, including a rope swing and some paid extra for the zipline. Everyone on our minibus back to Negril said they had a good time but I would warn everyone that the standard of driving in Jamaica leaves a lot to be desired and that included our driver, to a lesser degree.

Crocodiles and Waterfalls and another Perspective on Jamaica

The River Safari was alot of fun and the Guide provided lots of interesting facts about the ecosystem of the river. Yes we saw huge crocodiles! Also many different bird ans mangrove forests. Trip was about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace. YS Falls were beautiful and it was nice to drive up into the mountains and through small towns and see how the average Jamaican lives. Lunch (jerk chicken) was included and the falls did not disappoint. Our guide kept our phones dry for us and took lots of pictures, they are very careful and make the activity as safe as possible. Highly recommend this activity!
