The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collection—the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the world—is it’s key resource. The Museum's signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country's leading survey of the most recent developments in American art. Designed by architect Renzo Piano and situated between the High Line and the Hudson River, the Whitney's new building vastly increases the Museum’s exhibition and programming space, providing the most expansive view ever of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art. Enjoy iconic works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, and Georgia O'Keeffe in natural light filled galleries and sweeping views of Manhattan on the Museum’s outdoor observation decks. The Whitney welcomes you to the Meatpacking District, a 20 square-block neighborhood with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. The Museum is steps from the High Line, Chelsea Market, and a short walk from Greenwich Village, where the Museum was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930.

Visit to Whitney Museum of American Art

An excellent experience. The Alvin Ailey exhibition was particularly superb. Plus the day was gorgeous (cool but sunny) and the views from the rooftop terrace breathtaking.

Each floor was amazing the separate themes really kept everything interesting. The staff was very polite made the experience more personal.

Amazing exhibit on Alvin AIley

The current exhibit on Alvin Ailey is amazing. Provides historical, social and artistic context, demonstrating connections between Ailey and other dancers, musicians, and visual artists. I love the videos across the top of the room allowing everyone to see without standing in line or waiting your turn. Volume could have been a little softer, since there were also audio stations for people to listen to other A/V with headphones provided, but the headphones didn't block out the ambient sounds. But really, so beautiful. Also enjoyed the other floors, but this was really the highlight. The roof top cafe was fun, with great views, and food priced similar to a lot of places in NYC.

Excellent exhibition of modern art - well laid out with lots of space to reflect. Some amazing exhibits, which were very thought provoking. We really enjoyed our visit and all floors were open when we visited.
