Overview

Sowcarpet street food is a food walking tour in Chennai to stimulate your taste buds. Street Food Tour is a great way to experience Chennai through its delectable street food. It's a multi-sensorial experience over 2 hours as we taste the signature dishes from legendary food stalls as we walk through frenetic streets, narrow alleys brimming with food stalls and colorful shops. This tour is organized by Five Senses Tours, a private limited company recognized by the Ministry of Tourism and a member of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). The tour has been designed to support local livelihoods by way of employment of local guides, and supporting local businesses in line with the mission of the company to ensure travel dollars stay where they are spent.

  • C1 Flower Bazaar Police Station (Pass By)

    Our food connoisseur will meet you at the entrance of the Police Station.

  • Sowcarpet

    We will visit a local food joint which serves the iconic "Murukku Sandwich", most famous dish of Sowcarpet.

  • ANMOL LASSI

    We move to Anmol Lassi centre, a place run by an ex professional wrestler, Dinesh Soni. He has been quenching the thirst of visitors to Sowcarpet for the last 30 years. The signature offering is Kesar lassi which is a sweet and creamy drink made with non-sour curd. I Saffron and sugar top up the ingredients. Served chilled in large glasses, the lassi also get a few drops of dried cream.

  • Kakada Ramprasad Sweets and Chaats

    The food walk ends at the most famous chat shop of Sowcarpet called Kakada Ramprasad. Six decades since the classic Kakada jalebi was first fried in the quaint corners of Mint Street, the legacy of Kakada Ramprasad has come a long way. We will savor Aloo Tikki which is a magic of the blend of mashed potatoes and the traditional Indian spices. This will be followed by Jalebi, the dessert for all seasons.

  • Shree Vada Pav - best restaurant in sowcarpet

    Vada pav is the state dish of Maharashtra and the best place to savour it in Chennai is at Shree Vada Pav. It is a fast food dish which consists of a deep fried potato dumpling placed inside a bread bun sliced in half through the middle.

This walking food tour of Chennai was absolutely fantastic. Our guide Neeshanth was so knowledgeable about the area and took us to try some incredible local cuisine! Be sure to pace yourself at the beginning of the tour so you have room in your stomach to try the incredible variety of foods along the way! You will not leave hungry! Neeshanth was incredibly attentive to the group and kept us all safe walking around the bustling and busy streets. He was also so friendly and warm and made us all feel very welcome in an unfamiliar place. This was such a beautifully immersive experience, and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Thank you to Neeshanth for a great tour around the Sowcarpet market! He was great at managing our larger group (8 people) through the bustling streets of Chennai and making sure nobody got lost, and took us to some really delicious spots that had options we hadn’t tried or seen after being in India for a week! Be sure to come with very empty stomachs as this food tour will definitely leave you full!

Great experience on this tour. Although I’m very familiar with Indian food, this tour gave me an opportunity to try a lot of previously unknown foods. Everything was delicious, and no one had any stomach problems afterwards.
