    Fukuoka city’s biggest station, Hakata, has become more than just a point for travel. The station stands at 10 stories high with floors filled with shops, cafés and restaurants.   • Dazaifu Temmangu (Pass By)

    See the pretty, plum tree (blooming between Feb-March) -flanked Tenman-gū Shrine in Dazaifu, where university students pray for good exam results.   • Kushida Shrine (Pass By)

    Travel through time, to fully immerse into Japanese religion and traditions, your local host will be happy to introduce you to.   • Ohori Park (Pass By)

    The city’s biggest park. There is a walking path around the circumference of the pond, popular for jogging and leisurely strolls by the water. The perfect spot for a bento-box lunch!   • Fukuoka Castle Remains (Pass By)

    Once known as the biggest castle in the whole of Kyushu during the Edo Period, Fukuoka Castle was reduced to ruins after the Meiji Restoration. The remains of the castle mainly consist of gates and guard towers, and it allows visitors to get a lovely panoramic view of the pink cherry blossom (end March-beginning April). A Bite of the Big Apple! WTFuk?

You can find yourself saying WTF anywhere in Japan, but here the airport code is FUK so fun just writes itself. When I saw that my guide had lived in Fukuoka for 30 years and still retained a NYC flourish, WTF crossed my mind. Luis is fluent in English, Spanish and Japanese and is deeply woven into the community. I asked for a day of worthwhile places that I might miss and planning for the next few days. We did just that and enjoyed the city from sea and land while I learned about Fukuoka and how Luis ended up choosing to live here. During our walks we ran into folks that recognized Luis and said hello to us in all three of his languages! I followed many of Luis recommendations and came away feeling that he understood exactly the types of experiences I was seeking. If you are good he will get you a Brooklyn Burger if you are missing the taste of home. And like any New Yorker he knows where the good and bad are located so get yourself situated with a typical or different city intro. I can’t recommend Luis enough.
