We really wanted to visit Chichén Iza but after reading some reviews we were unsure if it’s a good use of our time and money. However, we decided to go in the end and we would definitely recommend this tour (with Mayab Travels).
What to expect:
- We were picked up at 6.50am from our hotel (the bus arrived promptly) and we were dropped off in the Cancún bus area where we were boarded onto our tour bus after a short wait. Chelino was our tour guide and we got a lot of useful info on the way (everything is said in both English and Spanish) - everything was clear and well organised
- The first stop was Chichikan, a mayan village where we stayed for approx 2h. We were given food (large variety of options and all good - and this is coming from a veggie, fussy eater) & we were given the opportunity to swim in a cenote. We didn’t go for it, but be prepared to rent a vest and locker with your own money based on the reviews as this is an additional activity you can do or skip so it is not included in the price. This also applies for drinks there - you’ll need to bring your own water or pay for your drinks
- We then had a super quick stop in Valladolid (20 mins). I think there is a nice park to visit but we used that time to buy some water instead
- Final stop was Chichén Itzá where tours were provided (one in English and one in Spanish). Our English tour guide was great and he gave us all the info we could have wished for. You then have some spare time if you want to see the sacred cenote (no swimming allowed) - I think we had 1.5/2h allowed here as well
- After that, we were dropped off back at our hotel (with one more pit stop for a bio break)
Some general comments:
- The tour takes 12-13h so bring water, hat, sun cream, swimming stuff, snacks etc. you can leave them in the bus safely
- We didn’t go for the deluxe option (which costs $17 more or so) which includes unlimited beverages in the bus as we brought water and snacks with us - however you may want to consider it if you don’t have supplies with you as it is VERY hot (38-40 degrees)
- The bus has AC which is very nice after wondering around
- Some of the reviews were that you are ‘pressured’ into buying/tipping everywhere - this is of course, expected (for people to try sell you things) but there is no pressure whatsoever. You can say no gracias and all is fine
All in all, it was a long day but we loved it ☺️
