Overview

Get ready for an authentic adventure inside the famous marble caves in Carrara. Jump on the Land Rover and explore the caves with your friendly local guide. Look inside the vast white wounds that open up on the wild slopes of Carrara, and learn how the quarries have provided marble to towns and cities across Italy for more than 2,000 years. Hear about the sweat of the men who mined the marble used to build the Pantheon and Trajan's Column in Ancient Rome, along with many sculptures of the Renaissance. Get in touch with the people, places, and machinery of an ancient tradition. Drive to different active quarries, up to 1,000 meters above sea level and hear how the noble stone is mined. Get detailed explanations about the old and modern excavation process. On our way back to Carrara, to taste a sample of the famous Lardo di Colonnata IGP.

Itinerary

  • Stadio dei Marmi (Pass By)

    Meeting point in the Stadio dei Marmi area in Carrara, meeting with the guide, and start of the tour. From here we begin the ascent among the vineyards of the green Candia Hills (famous for giving birth to a fine and original tasting Wine) along a route between the sea and the imposing Apuan Alps that is truly spectacular. We continue along an up-and-down dirt section until we find the asphalt road again, which leads directly into the heart of the Carrara Marble Quarries.

    Explore the most precious of Carrara's treasures: the white marble quarries. Aboard comfortable and powerful 4×4 jeeps, our guide will take you over the peaks of the Apuan Alps. Up to the marble basins at an altitude of 1,000 meters, to discover the magical place where Michelangelo found the block that gave birth to his world-famous Pieta.

Best Experience Ever!

We took the train to Carrara from Pisa after visiting the Leaning Tower in the AM. When we got off the train from Pisa, we didn’t see any other way to get to the meeting point except to walk there. Our GPS took us through an industrial area without sidewalks. My only recommendation is that the Meeting point be closer to the train station. We hiked to the meeting point through an industrial area that was very quiet. We were a bit concerned but we made it. Manuela, our driver, and Serena, our guide were AMAZING. We ended up having a private tour and my interior designer dreams came true. They took us up the mountain with a few stops along the way. We stopped at a mountain restaurant where we taste tested a meat called Lardo, that originates on the mountain. It was delish and reminded me of pancetta. We went into the mountain, towards the end of the day, and it was a bit quiet and peaceful. This was such an amazing experience, I can’t talk about it enough. Highly recommend this tour.

Great experience. The tour driver was amazing, our tour leader was knowledgeable and lovely. Well worth it, a must if you’re in the area and love marble.

Trip to the heart of the Marble Mountain

This particular tour was conducted by two very professional and knowledgeable people. The driver was amazing. He so easily navigated extremely narrow serpentine and brought us into the very heart of the marble mountain. The whole trip had a flavor of something surreal and fantastic. One of the strongest impressions from this tour was the amazing bravery and talents of the people committed to the marble excavation.

Exhilarating! We were greeted on time in an easy meet up spot. The vehicle was awesome and the driver was a pro. Felt very safe on those sheer drop offs. Our narrator was very fun and spoke English very well. It was a lot easier to get to than we anticipated. A great experience
