Overview

Situated within the Gold Reef City complex, the Apartheid Museum takes visitors into the dark heart of South Africa’s past. Opened in 2001, this one-of-a-kind museum documents the rise and fall of Apartheid. Exhibits including film footage, photographs and artefacts take visitors on a dramatic and emotionally charged journey from devastating racial segregation to the liberation of the oppressed. Discover how South Africa has shed the tyranny of its past and created a future as bright as the African sun itself.

My Apartheid Museum Tour

Had an amazing tour of the Apartheid Museum which is a must-see for anyone visiting Johannesburg! My tour guide was Banele and he was very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of Apartheid and gave some great recommendations for fun things to do in Johannesburg.

John was such an amazing and knowledgeable guide. I had considered doing a self-guided tour and am so glad I chose to have a guide! John knew all the history and was able to answer my many questions in depth giving me such a full experience. It was a powerful and necessary education.

Our driver and tour guide was excellent. Mo provided a great history lesson that helped to set the stage for visiting the museum. As we navigated through the museum he also provided outstanding context. We would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a great experience.
