Overview

A short and easy Glacier Walk tour from Sólheimajökull glacier in South Iceland is a great way to experience the Icelandic glaciers. On this tour you spend about an hour on the ice itself exploring all the interesting features it has to offer as such as stunning ice formations, crevasses and water cauldrons.

Meeting points

Please be at location 20 minutes before departure. Meet us at our base at Sólheimajökull Parking Lot. Driving time from Reykjavík is 2.5 hours. Drive along Road 1 on the South Coast, then take a left turn on Road 221. After ca. 5 minute drive, you will reach the starting point.

End point

This activity ends back at the meeting point.

Itinerary

You will meet your glacier guide in our Sólheimajökull Base Camp. After being fitted with a climbing harness, crampons and equipped with an ice ax, we will head up to the Sólheimajökull outlet glacier. The glacier walk starts with an introduction on how to walk and travel on glaciers and how to use the equipment you have been provided with. When everyone is ready and comfortable, the guide will lead you through the frozen wonderland if blue ice, glacial fomrations and deep crevasses.

  • A small amount of walking is involved (about an hour on the glacier itself, with multiple stops)

Fantastic experience!

Fantastic experience! What a privilege to be allowed to walk on an ancient glacier. Stunning views, very lucky with the weather, and our guide. Geert was funny, charming, knowledgeable and we felt safe in his hands. He guided us at our pace and took lots of photos for us. Definitely recommend.

Glacier Hike - good for all ages

A great experience made better by Sam our guide, who ensured that we were not only safe but also told us about the history and the science of the glacier and the surrounding environment. It was a perfect family outing but be prepped for changeable weather - we had sun, rain and wind. We managed to see a huge rainbow frame the glacier.

We have amazing tour! We see many ice and wow! So beautiful. We learn so many joke from our guide Sam. Sam teach us about Iceland and glacier. He made us feel safe on glacier and even thow I was so so scary. I would go Iceland again to do tour with Sam! We took many many selfie!

I had the best time! I booked the ATV tour near Vik, and my guide was absolutely amazing! I can’t remember his name but I went on the 2/02/25 for 10am, I came on my own and he made sure I was okay every step of the way! He was brilliant! Was also helping others at the plane site with photos and he gave us tips for the best photos! a great and breathtaking experience!! I then wanted to book a glacier hike and I drove only just 10 minutes down the road to the next location, again a massive shout out to Andrea Fiocca and Naiara! Andrea was just amazing, he informed me of changes, how they are formed and took us down some of the crevices, I couldn’t have asked for better guides! Naiara was fab, she helped with getting amazing pics and overall had such a good time! I would recommend it all in a heart beat! I was a solo traveller so this topped it all of! Thankyou all so much!

We really enjoyed our trip with Andrea Fiocca. The nature was beautiful and spectacular, but Andrea truly gave us a great experience. He explained a lot about the glacier and the surroundings and made our hike a wonderful journey!
