Overview

Join your host Putu in her kitchen for a private, hands-on cooking class. Unlike many other TripAdvisor tours, this is a private experience. You and your host will prepare 2-3 authentic Balinese dishes. As you chop, grind and grill, Putu will teach you about the spices she uses in her family recipes as well as the medicinal qualities of Balinese ingredients. Putu's kitchen is simple, with only a two-burner cooktop but you will be impressed by the speed and fluidity with which she prepares a complex menu with multiple dishes. You will taste a variety of authentic dishes with potential ones being Putu’s grilled eggplant with tomato, grilled fish with Balinese sambal (chili sauce), a curry dish (either chicken, fish or vegetarian) or perhaps a variety of pepes (foods seasoned with local spices, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed). You can expect the cooking lesson to last about 1-2 hours before you sit down and enjoy the delicious meal you helped prepare with your host and her family.

Itinerary

Putu lives in her ancestral village in a traditional family compound. When you arrive you will meet her grandparents, her husband, Pasta, as well as their three children. Putu learned to cook as a child, helping her grandmother prepare the daily meals. Her cooking skills have grown into a career and personal passion. Putu works as a cook at two private villas, creating fresh and creative Balinese dishes to delight her guests. She takes pride in her presentation and artfully decorates the dishes with delicately carved fruit and vegetables. At home, she is responsible for making the temple offerings, from the small offerings to the large fruit towers that she carries on her head during temple ceremonies. Putu also makes homemade jamu, traditional health tonics made from turmeric.  Putu’s grandparents are rice farmers and you will be served their homegrown rice with the meal. Putu and her family will take you on a tour of their compound and show you their family temple and explain about the objects in the temple. They have a lovely orchard where they grow jackfruit, cacao, durian, coffee and bananas. They also keep pigs, ducks, chickens and a cow. The Best Cooking Experience Ever...

This activity was sooooo amazing. I highly recommend booking this for your Bali vacation. Our host, Putu was absolutely amazing. We were transported to and from our hotel, had an opportunity to visit Putu's family home and temple, and spent time learning about the organic ingredients grown in their local farm. Putu did a great job allowing us to cook everything from scratch while she instructed on how to make and the significance of each ingredient. It definitely was worth way more than we paid and the food was abundant and very delicious. Highly recommend!!!

Amazing experience

What an amazing experience, my husband and myself participated in Putu's private cooking class and I would highly recommend. I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the fact that it was just us, as such we were able to communicate much better with Putu and her beautiful cousin Made about the food and their culture. The food we cooked was delicious and fresh and enjoyed it with an ice cold Bintang and fresh coconut. Putu and her husband even returned my phone the same night after I left it in their car, their family are beautiful people and the whole experience was enjoyable and relaxing.

Amazing food, amazing experience!

The class was amazing! Putu was a wonderful host. We got picked up from our hotel and drove out to the home with our host and driver. We are vegetarian, and our dietary preferences were easily accommodated. We also had a request for a particular dish we had tried before and wanted to learn how to make. Putu was happy to specialize the menu for us so we could learn to make exactly what we wanted. The home was beautiful and the lesson was organized very efficiently. Putu is a great teacher. We made six dishes and had way more food than we could eat by the end. Our host graciously packed up our leftovers for us, and we had amazing food for days afterwards. We were here on our honeymoon and absolutely loved this experience! Definitely worth it!

Best experience in Bali

This was our best experience in Bali. It was lovely to go to a traditional village. Putu is incredible and kind. She makes you feel so welcomed in her home. as she takes you through her garden which has amazing plantation. We loved learning about Balinese culture and authentic Balinese food. Oh and the food - the food was absolutely delicious. We only wished we stayed longer to attend another class. This was an amazing experience and would highly recommend this. There's really nothing to fault. Definitely not one to be missed.
