This was a small group tour available to cruise ship passengers. There were 8 in the tour group. Our guide Spencer was professional, very friendly and knowledgeable of the area. All along the way he explained the geography and history of the Jurassic coast. He took us on the easiest routes to the best lookouts and suggested his favourite locations for local foods. One of our best guides ever.
We travelled some back roads through the rolling Dorset hills to visit Westbay and the sight where Broadchurch was filmed. Durdle Door is a limestone archway. Spenser walked us along a hillside path to view as it takes too long to walk down to the arch. Lulworth Cove shows how Techtronic plates shaped the coast. This stop requires strenuous climbing of steep paths and steps. If you have mobility issues ask for directions for the paved road to the cove beach.
At Corfe Castle Spencer suggested the Train Station for views of the castle ruins and the Rail car café. The steam train’s arrival for photos while we were there was a bonus.
In Weymouth Spenser recommended Bennett's Fish & Chips for a late lunch. Arriving after the lunch rush we avoided a long queue. The food was good and fast leaving time to wander around the old harbour. Last stop is the Olympic Rings from 2012 on the hilltop overlooking Chesil beach and the town. A retaining wall is made from stone and fossils of trees and ammonites.
The 7 hour tour was well paced and we saw much of the Dorset countryside. We did not feel tired at the end of the day. Spencer provided water and snacks to keep going before lunch. Highly recommended.
